Kaohsiung assists Tainan in combating dengue feverHuang Chih-chung, director of the Kaohsiung County Bureau of Health, made the announcement in his report to the county government during a routine meeting of senior officials. Huang indicated that the number of indigenous dengue fever cases in Tainan City has reached 477 since the beginning of the year, while Kaohsiung City has recorded 64 cases and Tainan County 32. Huang said there are five to 10 new cases of dengue fever reported in Tainan City every day, while Kaohsiung has only reported three confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne disease since the past summer. Given that dengue fever virus will remain rampant in October, the county official suggested that athletes coming for the upcoming Tainan City games take anti-dengue precautions, noting that a delegation from his bureau is now in Tainan City helping with works to control and prevent a wider outbreak. The National Athletic Games is a major sports competition at which athletes will be chosen to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Dengue fever is a flu-like viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, which often breed in stagnant water close to human dwellings. The disease usually begins suddenly with a high fever, rash, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscles and joint pain, accompanied by nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. | |||||||||||||
