Updated Monday, October 8, 2007 0:00 am TWN, CNA KMT VP candidate in San FranciscoSiew was greeted at the airport by Mark W. P. Liao, director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco, and hundreds of Taiwan expatriates. Describing his just-concluded three-day visit to the U.S. capital as “satisfactory,” Siew told reporters that he can tell that the United States has great expectations of Taiwan and keenly hopes to maintain traditionally cordial ties between the two countries. Siew said he strongly believes that friendly Taiwan-U.S. relations can be restored and further improved if the KMT retakes power in March 22, 2008 presidential election. While in Washington D.C., Siew visited the U.S. Congress and met with 18 senators and 24 House representatives to exchange views on political philosophy. According to Siew, his visit to Washington D. C. should help improve the impression that the United States has of the KMT. Siew is slated to stay in San Francisco for three days, where he will attend a flag raising ceremony to observe the Oct. 10 National Day of the Republic of China with ROC nationals, and call on hi-tech companies and local Chinese communities to exchange views on and explore means of reinvigorating and expanding Taiwan’s economy. Siew will then proceed to Canada after wrapping up his visit to the United States. He is accompanied by John C. T. Feng, a former ambassador to the Dominican Republic, and several well known figures on his current North American tour. Siew and former KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou have paired up on a ticket to contest the coming presidential poll with the rival ticket of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, composed of Frank Hsieh and Su Tseng-chang, both of whom previously served as premier.
