Taipei dept. store reports losses after storm

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Typhoon Krosa has caused over NT$100 million in lost business due to a day’s close of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store’s Nanking West Road branch, the store said yesterday.

The branch is currently having its anniversary sale.

An official from Shin Kong Mitsukoshi said, “the mall was closed due to natural disaster and safety reasons, but everything is back on track today after a day’s rest. All departments will be open, although parts of Taiwan are still on typhoon break.”

Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s anniversary sales, lead by the Nanking store started the previous Thursday, made a total of NT$154 millions in sales, and NT$110 million on Friday, but they had to close on Saturday, because of the typhoon Krosa.

“Saturday was the third day, and the first weekend of the anniversary sales, it should have reached an outstanding record of sales, at least NT$100 million. Who would ever have thought of a typhoon bringing the day’s sales down to zero.” said Shin Kong Mitsukoshi officials.

Other shopping centers who are also having anniversary sales were closed yesterday as well.

Idee shopping centers of Taipei, Taoyuan were closed yesterday, and Taichung, Chiayi centers were closed after noon. The anniversary sales have been ongoing for ten days and have a total sales average of NT$65 million.

Breeze Center have a 59 days anniversary sales, hoping to reach a goal of NT$2 billion.

Officials from Breeze center said that although the center was closed on Saturday, sales from the previous ten days had an outstanding record, a day’s close shouldn’t affect the total sales as much.
