Vegetable prices skyrocket in wake of Typhoon Krosa“There will not be any reasonable prices for vegetables this fall,” said Chen Chung-nan, official of Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Co. Vegetables such as cabbages, peppers, garlic, spinaches, and other high-altitude plants will continue to see high prices and remain short on stock for the next while, he said. The Ilan three-star green onion on the market yesterday were still priced at NT$150 per kilogram because of the immediate collecting by the farmers before the typhoon damages, but Chen is afraid that the price will go up further in this fall and winter. He suggests consumers could purchase Changhua green onions instead of the Ilan three-star green onion. Vegetable merchant indicated that all vegetables prices has gone up other than bean sprouts, watercress has gone from NT$45 to NT$65 per catty (600 grams) and Lishan cabbages has gone from NT$85 to NT$100 per catty. “The roads to Lishan are under construction because of the typhoon, all the vegetables are carried out with man power by the aboriginal, of course the prices are expansive.” the merchant said. Bags of bean sprouts are carried by almost everyone in the local traditional market since eating a plate of other vegetables are seven times more expensive than eating a plate of bean sprouts. “Eating rice with vegetable as side dishes are too luxurious, meals of noodles are more affordable now.” said by Lin, while she was buying noodle. The average pricing for yesterday’s agricultural goods are NT$40.75, gone up two dollars from the day before. | |||||||||||||
