COA says 47 rivers at high risk of mudflows

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Forty-seven rivers are at high risk of experiencing mudflows owing to heavy rain caused by Typhoon Krosa, officials at the Council of Agriculture’s Soil and Water Conservation Bureau warned yesterday.

The affected areas include 21 villages in five townships located in Taipei County, Yilan County and Hsinchu County, where residents have been evacuated to safer places, the officials said.

Another 831 rivers are listed as at moderate risk, affecting 80 townships in Yilan County, Taipei County, Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung County, Taichung City, Nantou County and Chiayi County, they said adding that residents in these areas have been advised to prepare for evacuation.
