KMT VP candidate Siew visits U.S. Congress

WASHINGTON -- The opposition Kuomintang’s vice presidential candidate, Vincent Siew, visited the U.S. Congress on the first day of his visit to America, with an aim of strengthening bilateral relations, the party’s representative in Washington, D.C. said Wednesday.

Jason Yuan said Siew met with 18 senators, including Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Carl Levin, Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Joe Lieberman, and Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican minority leader.

The senators stated that they expect Taiwan will act as a peacemaker in the Asia-Pacific area and take pragmatic measures to maintain regional peace across the Taiwan Strait, Yuan said.

Siew replied that the KMT understands their concerns and will act responsibly instead of acting as a “troublemaker, “ if victorious in the upcoming elections.

The House Committee on Foreign Affairs held a welcome party for Siew the same day, which was attended by 24 House members, including the committee’s Chairman Tom Lantos, Co-Chairman of the House Congressional Taiwan Caucus Steve Chabot, and senior Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, as well as House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

They all praised Taiwan’s freedom and democracy, and agreed that the Taiwanese people have the right to decide their future.
