Drug contaminated crabs from India to be destroyedOfficials from the DOH Bureau of Food Safety said that 384 kilograms of live crabs, imported from India by a company in Taipei County, had been found to contain nitrofuran metabolites — substances that indicate use of the drug. The concentration of nitrofuran metabolites detected in the Indian crabs stood at 5.4 ppb, in contravention of Taiwan’s regulations, which allow no nitrofuran metabolites in any seafood produce, regardless of whether it is imported or locally-produced. The officials said that consumers can be at ease as none of this batch of live crabs from India had been distributed on the domestic market. In the wake of this finding, the DOH has increased the inspection rate of India imported live crabs from 5 to 20 percent, the officials said. | |||||||||||||
