Man uses dog-napping to force a tryst with ownerChow Ping-yi, 34, of Taipei, was prosecuted on two counts: fraud and coercion. A Taipei district prosecutor charged Chow with appearing as a cousin of his girlfriend’s to claim a Maltese dog from a pet shop on Nungan Street where the little canine was given special grooming, and threatened to kill it if she didn’t accept a date. On June 30, the prosecutor wrote in a written indictment, Chow — to whom his one-time lover had already written a Dear John letter — showed the pet salon owner her picture on his cellphone to convince the latter that he really was her cousin. He then told the salon operator she wanted him to return to her the Maltese pet, named Yuan Yuan (Round Round). After he had dog-napped Round Round, Chow called his former lover, threatening to slaughter the Maltese if she did not meet him. His girlfriend, identified only by her family name of Pan, had to agree to a forced tryst. The date was set for the night, only a few hours after Chow had called. Pan kept the appointment. She was accompanied by a policeman, however. She had reported the case. The cop arrested Chow after the pet had come back to its rightful owner, safe and sound. | |||||||||||||
