Plan to boycott Taiwan U.N. Day ‘unacceptable’

Shieh, who concurrently serves as Government Information Office (GIO) minister, made the remarks after lawmakers of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP) blocked the proposal earlier in the day from being placed on the agenda for discussion at Friday’s legislative plenary session.

Shieh said the boycott of the proposal demonstrates that the KMT opposes the country’s U.N.-membership bid, even though the party initiated a campaign for a referendum on pushing for the country’s return to the U.N. under the country’s official name “Republic of China.”

Describing President Chen Shui-bian’s campaign to join the U.N. under the name Taiwan as the “common aspiration” of the Taiwanese people, Shieh said the Cabinet will submit the “U.N. Day” proposal to the legislature again.
