Tropical Storm Krosa ‘likely’ to affect Taiwan in 4-5 days: CWB

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tropical Storm Krosa, the 15th storm in the western Pacific this year, formed Tuesday morning east of the Philippines and is likely to affect Taiwan in four to five days, said the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) yesterday.

Whether or not Taiwan will be affected will be determined in the next couple of days, according to the CWB’s Weather Forecast Center.

As of 2 p.m. yesterday, Krosa was travelling at 17 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction. It was located some 1,200 kilometers southeast of the island.

The storm has a radius of 150 km, with maximum center winds of 30 meters per second and gusts reaching 38 meters per second.

If Krosa starts moving north in the next few days then it will not approach Taiwan. However, as it is moving very slowly it is still difficult to tell what direction it will take in the next few days, said CWB meteorologists, who added that they did not rule out the possibility that Krosa might develop into a typhoon and affect Taiwan as early as this weekend.
