1.5 tons of U.S. strawberries destroyed

A shipment of almost 1.5 metric tons of fresh American strawberries was destroyed in Taipei County yesterday because it contained excessive levels of pesticides.

The 1.437 tons of strawberries, packed in 348 cartons, were found to contain residues of the pesticide fenpropathrin, the presence of which is banned in certain farm produce, according to officials at the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The officials said the strawberries were imported by a company in Sanchong City from suppliers in Watsonville on California’s central coast.

The Sanchong company said it has imported the same produce from the same source for two years and claimed no shipments were found to have the banned pesticide in the past.

The importer told officials that none of the strawberries in the latest shipment has been sold on the market yet.

To protect Taiwan consumers, the shipment was destroyed at the importer’s warehouse under the supervision of health officials from the Taipei County Government.of pesticides.
