MOFA advises ROC citizens against visiting Myanmar

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) advised the country’s citizens yesterday not to visit Myanmar for the time being, amid a violent crackdown on protests against military rule in the Southeast Asian nation.

MOFA Deputy spokeswoman Yeh Fei-pi said the ministry is closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar, where at least seven people have been killed and more than 100 injured since the military junta launched the crackdown Wednesday.

The ministry has also instructed the country’s representative office in Thailand to help contact Taiwanese businesspeople in Myanmar to remind them to remain vigilant with regard to their personal safety.

According to Yeh, more than 100 Taiwanese businesspeople maintain operations in Myanmar, but most of them have recently returned to Taiwan to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

As to the 20 to 30 businesspeople who are still in Myanmar, most live far away from the capital city Yangon and are reported to be safe and sound, Yeh said.

Quoting the Travel Agent Association, she further said there are currently one or two Taiwan tourist groups in Myanmar and that all the members of the groups are safe.

Mandarin Airlines said yesterday that its flight service to Myanmar will not be affected for the time being amid reports that Myanmar’s government has begun a violent crackdown after tolerating more than a month of ever larger protests.

The only air carrier in Taiwan that flies to Myanmar, said that it was informed by its branch office in Myanmar that landings and take-offs at the local airport have continued as usual. Mandarin Airlines is currently cooperating with 10 travel agencies to promote tourism in Myanmar. SET Co., a local travel agency, said that Myanmar is a devout Buddhist country and is hardly a hot tourism spot. The agency currently arranges one group tour to the Southeast Asian country per month.
