MOFA expects steady progress in ties with Japan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) looks forward to steady progress in relations between Taiwan and Japan after the new Japanese prime minister assumes office later this month, an official said yesterday.

MOFA spokesman Wang Chien-yeh made the remarks after Yasuo Fukuda was elected president of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) earlier in the day.

The victory guarantees Fukuda’s election as outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s successor in parliament Tuesday because of the LDP’s vast majority in the lower house, the more powerful of the two chambers of the Japanese Diet.

Wang said the Republic of China’s representative in Japan will congratulate Fukuda on his accession to the premiership on behalf of the government after he formally takes office.

Noting that Fukuda has been friendly toward Taiwan, Wang said Fukuda had visited Taiwan on three occasions before 2000 and is a member of a Taiwan-Japan parliamentary amity group. In 2002 when Fukuda was Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, he explicitly voiced support for Taiwan’s bid to join the World Health Organization in an appropriate method.
