55 percent of American people support Taiwan U.N. bid: Chen

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Some 55 percent of American people have shown their support for Taiwan’s bid to join the United Nations and the percentage would shoot up to 70 percent if Taiwan passes a national referendum on the U.N. bid, President Chen Shui-bian said in an interview published in the German weekly Spiegel yesterday.

Chen said he regretted that U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon returned Taiwan’s membership application, which represented the will of 23 million Taiwanese people and the government, based on the 2758 U.N. Resolution that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China, which, however, is not acceptable to the U.S., Japan, and Australia, among others.

Chen continued that the U.S. government can hardly stand behind Taiwan’s U.N. bid, but quite a few leading newspapers, such as the Wall Street Journal, The Seattle Times, and The Oklahoman have voiced their support for Taiwan’s U.N. membership bid. Many U.S. congressmen have also issued statements to uphold Taiwan’s right to enter the U.N.

During the interview, Chen also cited a survey report issued by Zogby International, one of the three leading public opinion firms in the U.S., as indicating that 55 percent of American people polled said Taiwan should be allowed into the U.N., and that the percentage had shot up 15 percentage points to 70 percent if Taiwan’s national referendum on its U.N. bid is endorsed by a majority of Taiwanese citizens.
