MOTC cautions on traffic snarls, heavy rains; urges alternate routes

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Officials of the National Expressway Bureau yesterday cautioned motorists using the freeway network to watch out for possible traffic jams at several sections today and urged them to take alternate highway routes.

For the north-south Freeway No. 1, the congestion areas will cover the section between the Taoyuan International Airport and Pingcheng Interchange in Taoyuan County in the north and between Silo of Yunlin County and Shuishang of Chiayi County in southwest Taiwan.

For Freeway No. 3, the congestion spots will cover the section between Yinge in Taipei County and Tashi in Taoyuan County.

For Freeway No. 5, the congestion spots will cover the section between Shiding in Taipei County and Toucheng in Yilan County in the north and between Wufeng and Tsaoton in central Taiwan.

Officials at the bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) suggested that motorists take advantage of the temporary exemption of toll charges from midnight to 6 a.m. for the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival holidays.

Driving speed at several sections was slowed down to only 30 to 50 kilometers per hour at certain freeway sections due to heavy traffic load yesterday, compared with 100 kilometers an hour for regular days, they said.

Meanwhile, the Central Weather Bureau, also under the MOTC, issued alert on heavy rains for people going to eastern Taiwan and mountain regions in northern Taiwan today.

Bureau officials said a magnitude 5 earthquake shook Yilan in northeastern Taiwan at 2:27 p.m. yesterday, with no reports of casualties or damage.

The quake’s epicenter was located 11.5 km northeast of an earthquake monitoring center in Nanau, Yilan County in waters off the coast of the northeastern county at a depth of 18.2 km.

The quake had an intensity of 6 in Nanau, 4 in Hoping in Hualien County, 3 in Yilan City, Sankuang township in Taoyuan, Wufenshan in Taipei and Hohuanshan in Nantou, and 2 in Taichung, Hualien City, Taipei City, Taoyuan City and Keelung City, the bureau reported.
