Deaths could increase during Mid-Autumn Festival

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Department of Health urged the public to care more about those around them who tend to show great emotional fluctuations around major festivals with the approach of the Sept. 25 Mid-Autumn Festival.

Chiang Hung-ki, executive director of DOH suicide prevention center, noted that statistics show that during major festivals such as Tombsweeping Day, Dragon Boat Day or Chinese New Year, when families usually get together to celebrate or remember the dead, the number of suicides increases dramatically. Chiang attributed the cause of the increase to emotional fluctuations during those days.

He said members of the public can ask those in distress how they are doing, express sympathy and introduce them to counselling services by calling the center hotline on 0800788995.
