Supply of E3 ethanol-blended gasoline to start on Sept. 29

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Starting Sept. 29, eight gas stations in Taipei of the state-run CPC Corp. Taiwan will supply E3 ethanol-blended gasoline, in line with the government’s efforts to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, officials with the Energy Commission under the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.

The Energy Commission yesterday kicked off a plan calling for some 2,000 vehicles owned by government agencies in Taipei, excluding fire engines and ambulances to use E3 ethanol-blended gasoline—97 percent of gasoline and 3 percent of ethanol.

The eight gas stations in question are the Chunglun Station, Wenlin Road Station, Hsinyi Road Station, Linshen North Road Station, Hoping West Road Station, LungAn Station, Fuyang Street Station, and Nankang Station.

While the 2,000 public vehicles are required to consume E3 ethanol-blended gasoline, the general public can also have optional use of such gasoline. The price for E3 ethanol-blended gasoline will be lower than that for 95-octane unleaded gasoline, with the incentive to last through the end of 2008, according to Yeh Hui-ching, director of the Energy Commission.

Yeh said that E3 ethanol-blended gasoline has a high content of oxygen and boasts high burning efficiently. As a result, every kiloliter of such gasoline can reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 21. metric tons.

Based on a plan worked out by the Energy Commission, the CPC Corp. Taiwan will supply E3 ethanol-blended gasoline in Taipei alone through the end of 2008, with total supply amount estimated at 770 kiloliters.

From 2009 to 2010, the supply of such gasoline will be extended to the southern port city of Kaohsiung. Total annual supply of E3 ethanol-blended gasoline will amount to 12,000 kiloliters.

Starting 2011, the CPC Corp. Taiwan will supply E3 ethanol-blended gasoline around the island, with annual supply estimated at 100,000 kiloliters.
