Growing pressure from China on Taiwan United Uations bid: KMT aideChang Jung-kung, director of the KMT’s mainland affairs department, issued the warning in a news release. According to Chang, tension across the Taiwan Strait has being building amid China’s growing objections to the DPP’s U.N. referendum plan. The Chinese cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office has proclaimed that holding a U.N. referendum would be considered a move toward Taiwan independence by Beijing, and that China has fully readied itself for the worst-case scenario. In recent days, Chang pointed out, China has shifted away from a more restrained approach to engage in fierce public attacks against Taiwan, evidenced by the Xinhua News Agency and the People’s Daily, which both ran several articles over the weekend to slam Taiwan’s U.N. cause. Taiwan will increasingly be put at a disadvantage after Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, has concluded his current tour to the United States and Europe to counter international condemnation of Taiwan over the U.N. referendum issue, he argued. Escalating cross-strait tension has led to widespread public concern over the DPP’s ability to protect Taiwan’s security, in particular after the United States voiced disagreement with the DPP’s plan to hold the referendum, he added. Taiwan will be further isolated in the international community if the DPP obstinately presses ahead with its efforts to promote Taiwan independence, he went on, warning that the backlash from China will be “conspicuous” if it decides to go into action against the DPP government. | |||||||||||||
