Updated Tuesday, September 18, 2007 0:00 am TWN, CNA DPP seeks to amend ‘normal country’ draftAccording to Yu, more than half of the DPP lawmakers and around 90 percent of the chairmen of the party’s city and county chapters have endorsed the motion calling for including the name-rectification article in the party’s “normal country” resolution. The motion will be submitted with the “normal country” resolution for discussion and endorsement by party delegates at a party congress slated for Sept. 30, Yu told reporters, adding that if the DPP does not dare to include the name-rectification article in the resolution, it will not win the support of the Taiwan people. Yu said the motion requires that the nation enact a new constitution and change the national title to Taiwan so as to formally declare that Taiwan is an independent sovereign country. The change of the national title from the Republic of China to Taiwan should be included in the DPP’s “normal country” resolution, especially after U.S. officials recently said that Taiwan is not a country at this point, Yu stressed. “This is the best way to counter China’s Anti-Secession Law targeting the island and opposition Kuomintang presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou’s advocacy of ultimate unification with China,” he continued. Asked about President Chen Shui-bian’s attitude toward the issue, Yu said that the president supports both his promotion of the “normal country” resolution and the inclusion of the name rectification article in the resolution. Yu further said he has asked DPP Secretary-General Lin Chia-lung to communicate with Lee Ying-yuan, secretary-general of DPP presidential candidate Frank Hsieh’s campaign office in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, on the issue.
