Rally for Taiwan’s return to United Nations covered extensively in int’l press

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Democratic Progressive Party’s rally in Kaohsiung Saturday for a referendum on Taiwan’s return to the United Nations has generated extensive coverage in the international media, Presidential Office officials said.

Presidential Office officials quoted by Central News Agency said that the rally for Taiwan’s return to the U.N. under the name of Taiwan drew immediate coverage from the Associated Press, Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Agence France-Presse, CNN and the BBC.

Officials credited the media success to President Chen Shui-bian’s high-profile videoconferences with overseas organizations, including the conservative U.S. thinktank American Enterprise Institute in Washington, the annual meeting of the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations in Japan and interviews with the international press.

The Presidential Office has entered into an arrangement with the CNN Web site CNNI to establish a link there with access to contents of the American Enterprise Institute videoconference, officials said.

Officials said that the videoconferences will allow the international community to learn about Taiwan’s exclusion from the U.N., despite its status as the world’s sixteenth largest trading nation.

Officials also said the volume of international media coverage on the government’s application to enter the U.N. under the name of Taiwan this year was four times greater than it was last year.

The officials added that the international media coverage on Taiwan’s application for the U.N. has been positive.

Last Wednesday, President Chen granted an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
