ainan city government was inaugurated Saturday with the aim of safeguarding tourists at several historic sites in the southern city. Tainan Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair presided over a flag presentation ceremony near the city's Anping Kaitai Matsu Temple to mark the formation of the city's first bicycle-mounted patrol troop which he described as a major step marking the city's development towards becoming a more complete tourist city.
The squad, consisting of 16 police officers and 20 volunteers, will go on patrol on weekends and national holidays at the city's major tourist areas, including Anping Old Fort, Yengping old street, Anping "Tree House," Lin Mo-Niang Park and Eternal Golden Castle.
According to city officials, all the patrol troopers are required to wear uniforms and ID badges, and carry tourist maps and city travel guidebooks containing transportation information while carrying out their duties.
