Mayor Hau leads bicycle tour in Car Free Day

City government officials hope to cut vehicle traffic by 60 percent tomorrow, and encourage Taipei residents to utilize public transportation and ecologically friendly modes of transportation such as walking or cycling.

Members of the public are encouraged to join the bicycle ride, which will begin at the Taipei County Civic Plaza in Panchiao at 8:10 a.m. tomorrow. The 12-kilometer ride will pass through Taipei’s historic district of Wanhua and a section of the tree-lined Renai Road before reaching the Taipei City Civic Plaza.

Between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. tomorrow the MRT stations of Panchiao and Taipei City Hall will allow bicycle access along with a 20 percent discount off the original one-way NT$100 fare for passengers traveling with bicycles tomorrow.

Street carnivals in Panchiao and Taipei’s Dinghao Business District are also in the works.

Starting at 10 a.m., Chunghsiao E. Road between Fuhsing N. Road and Tunhua N. Road in Taipei City will be sectioned off for a carnival featuring an exhibition on creative environmental protection and a vintage item sale.

At 12 p.m., the Panchiao street carnival will begin with programs including extreme bicycle riding, interactive “green” transportation displays, and an appearance by Taipei County’s mounted police who will be available for photos with the public.

Beyond Car Free Day, select MRT stations on the Danshui, Xindian, and Beitou-Nanshijiao lines are open to bicycle access every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to the end of the day’s service. The bicycle-friendly stations are Hongshulin, Zhuwei, Guandu, Beitou, Qilian, Mingde, Shilin, Yuanshan, Shuanglian, Dingxi, Nanshijiao, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Gongguan, Dapinglin, and Xindian.
