lion pairs per day, comes at the cost of depleting 700 soccer fields of forests, the local Delta Electronics Foundation reported yesterday in a joint press conference with cable channels Animal Planet and Discover. Under the motto "a pair a day to combat global warming," the three organizations, led by Foundation Director Fan Wen, hoped to raise Taiwan public's awareness of environmental protection issues.
In addition to Animal Planet and Discover channels' educational TV programs on global ecology and biodiversity, the foundation has been promoting power conservation programs for homes, recommending that consumers switch to less power consuming fluorescent light bulbs and household appliances that have built-in energy-saving mechanisms.
Fan urged commuters to take advantage of public transportation and bicycle paths as a way to reduce carbon-dioxide emission and save money at the same time. Fan also suggested online communication as a substitute for unnecessary air travel.
Hsiao Hui-chuan, director of Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration's (EPA) Department of Air Quality Protection and Noise Control, offered her own advice: Use recycled products and economize air conditioning usage by keeping the thermostat between the optimum range of 26 and 28 degrees Celsius.
The EPA offers 41 tips on how to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at home on its website (http://www.epa.gov.tw/english/).
