The Democratic Progressive Party chairman calls for change of national title

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Yu Shyi-kun claimed yesterday that Taiwan independence is mainstream public opinion, adding that only by changing the national title to Taiwan and enacting a new constitution can the country survive.

Yu made the remarks while addressing an annual meeting of the World Taiwanese Congress being held in Taipei.

Citing the results of a DPP public opinion survey conducted recently, Yu said 69 percent of those polled identified themselves as Taiwanese, while only 18 percent said they are Chinese.

According to Yu, those expressing support for independence hit an all-time high of 57 percent, which he said demonstrates that Taiwan independence has become core public opinion.

He also said a planned referendum on whether to apply for membership of the United Nations under the name Taiwan or seeking to build Taiwan into a “normal country” will not alter the cross-Taiwan Strait status quo.

Taiwan is a defender of freedom, democracy and human rights, not a troublemaker, Yu went on, adding that China is a hegemonic country, not a free and democratic one.
