Depression near Guam may become tropical storm

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A low pressure system that formed northeast of Guam early Friday is likely to become a tropical storm, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said in a forecast.

CWB meteorologists said the tropical depression, still 3,700 km from Taiwan, was moving west-northwestward at 15 km per hour.

Although the low pressure system remains loosely structured at present, it is likely to develop into a tropical storm within the next two days, they added.

If the system’s intensity is upgraded to that of a tropical storm, it will be the 10th storm in the western Pacific this year and will take the name “Danas” — a name contributed by the Philippines meaning “to experience and to feel.”
