Twelve Africans arrested for overstaying visas

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Twelve African people were arrested last Sunday in downtown Taipei after they were discovered having overstayed their visas and having been allegedly involved in criminal offenses, according to a news release issued Friday by the National Immigration Agency (NIA).

NIA inspectors and Taipei city police launched a raid on a nightclub in the Zhongshan district Aug. 2, after the agency was informed by Legislator Chen Chao-rung of the opposition Kuomintang, of a group of foreigners from Africa illegally staying in Taiwan, who gathered at the nightclub each weekend.

They will be deported after the NIA confirms their identities, and whether they have committed any crimes in Taiwan, the news release said.
