TAITRA signs pact with Japan’s Fukuoka government

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) has signed an agreement with the Fukuoka prefectural government to promote mutual exchanges and cooperation on agriculture, tourism and the IC design industry, a senior TAITRA official said yesterday.

Walter Yeh, executive vice president of TAITRA, a non-profit trade promotion organization, made the announcement a day after signing the accord.

Yeh said the pact was inked while Fukuoka Vice Governor Nakashima Takayuki was leading a 40-member delegation of representatives from the semiconductor, agricultural and tourism industries on a visit to Taiwan.

Yeh added that TAITRA will also form a home appliances promotional delegation comprising 80 members from 63 enterprises that will visit Japan and hold talks Sept. 10 with their Japanese counterparts in the hope of promoting strategic alliances.

As Japan is Taiwan’s second-largest trade partner and Fukuoka Prefecture is located in Kyushu, a region of great economic potential, TAITRA is keen on forming cooperative ties with the government, Yeh said, adding that Kyushu’s gross domestic product for 2006 reached US$383 billion, on par with Netherlands and Australia.
