Man mysteriously dies of gas inhalation in Chiayi

A man died from inhaling gas trapped inside a plastic bag that was tied around his neck, police in Chiayi City said yesterday.

The body of the man, a 26-year-old cook surnamed Chan, was found by his live-in girlfriend late Friday night in their residence located in an apartment complex on Hsuchouyi Street of the southern county. A plastic bag covered Chan’s head and was wrapped around his neck with a mobile phone charger cable, said police.

Investigators said they are unclear on whether the death was a suicide or a murder. They found no signs of struggle on the body, but are not ruling out the possibility of drug poisoning.

The reason for Chan’s death also remains a mystery. According to police records, Chan had lost his job about two months ago over a sexual harassment case for which he also had to pay NT$200,000. Investigators said the loss of his job might have been a reason for Chan to commit suicide.
