The Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office celebrates 62nd National Day

Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office (VECO) in Taipei hosted a reception yesterday to celebrate the 62nd National Day Anniversary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam with foreign dignitaries, business leaders and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Chang Siao-yue in attendance.

VECO Head Nguyen Ba Cu said that Vietnam has been increasingly engaging with the world.

“In pursuing the foreign policy of independence, diversification and multilateralization of external relations and in wishing to be a friend and a reliable partner of all, Vietnam has become a full-fledged member of the WTO, successfully hosting the 14th APEC Summit,” said Nguyen.

Nguyen said that Vietnam has progressed as a nation since its founding 62 years ago.

“In 62 years of national construction and development, rising to enormous difficulties and challenges, Vietnam has firmly marched forward, enjoying political stability and sustainable economic growth,” said Nguyen.

Taiwan investment in Vietnam has totaled US$8.5 billion, and the Republic of China has become Vietnam’s third largest foreign investor and fifth largest trading partner.

Nguyen said that economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has played an important part in the social and economic development of Vietnam.

“Suffice it to say that the effective economic and trade cooperation between Taiwan and Vietnam over the past ten years has made worthy contributions to the cause of economic and social development in Vietnam,” he said.

Chang said that Taiwan’s strong foreign investment in Vietnam can be seen in Hon Hai Group’s recent ventures in the southeast Asian nation.

“On Aug. 2, Hon Hai Group’s Chairman Terry Guo presided over the opening ceremony of one of the Group’s new factories in Vietnam. He officially announced that he will invest US$5 billion in Vietnam to build science parks, harbors and new communities,” said Chang.

Chang added that Hon Hai Group could become Vietnam’s largest foreign investor and the enterprise that generates the most foreign exchange for Vietnam.
