Taiwan to hold first summit with African allies

The government will hold the first leadership summit with its African diplomatic allies in Taipei Sept. 9, in which President Chen Shui-bian will share Taiwan’s various successful experiences with his African counterparts, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday.

The heads of state of Taiwan’s five allies in Africa — Swaziland, Malawi, Gambia, Burkina Faso and Sao Tome and Principe — will attend the summit, MOFA spokesman David Wang told a press conference.

At the summit, Chen will speak about Taiwan’s achievements in digital technology, sustainable development, economic growth, medical care and security issues, Wang said. He will also sign a joint communique with the visiting African leaders following the summit, Wang went on.

In addition to the summit, the government will organize a forum Sept. 10 to invite the allies’ government officials, business people, academics and experts from various fields to exchange ideas with their Taiwanese counterparts, Wang said.

The African leaders will also be invited to attend the 2007 World Wheelchair and Amputee Games to be held Sept. 11, according to Wang.
