Government Information Office to start accepting bids for use of its United Nations logo

The Government Information Office (GIO) will start accepting applications for use of its logo bearing the image of a whale in a tank symbolizing Taiwan’s desire to join the United Nations, in an effort to better promote the government’s U.N. bid, a GIO official said yesterday.

Firms that have their designs approved by the GIO and pay a royalty fee of NT$10,000 will be authorized to use the GIO designed logo on all their products for a year, the official said.

A T-shirt with the logo worn by GIO Minister Shieh Jhy wei for U.N. bid promotion activities has drawn the public’s attention, prompting the GIO came up with the idea of letting more people use the logo to facilitate the U.N. campaign.

The whale in a fishtank logo shows a humpback whale that has a similar shape to Taiwan trying to escape from a tank that limits its space and isolates it from outside world. The logo symbolizes Taiwan’s exclusion from the United Nations and its desire to break free of restrictions and isolation imposed on it.

The GIO expressed the hope that authorized firms would use part of their profits from products bearing the logo for social welfare so that the logo will not only speak for Taiwan’s need to join the United Nations but will also benefit society, the official said, adding that application details can be accessed via the GIO’s Web site.

The official said the government’s promotion advertisements for the U.N. bid will be seen in New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, in public phone booths downtown and on buses around the headquarters of the United Nations from September, in order to let its voice be heard by the United Nations General Assembly that will start its next session Sept. 18.
