Top Tainan health official sacked over dengue spread

The top health official in Tainan City lost his job Tuesday to take the blame for failing to bring a dengue fever epidemic in the southern city under control.

Tainan Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair decided to sack Su Chun-jen, director of the city government’s Bureau of Public Health, and replace him with Hu Shu-chen, an associate professor at National Cheng Kung University.

Su confirmed that he had been notified about the decision, which will become effective Sept. 1.

Su was a neurosurgeon at the city’s Chi Mei Medical Center before he became director of the public health bureau eight years ago.

Rumors had been rife in the past week that he could lose his job after multiple dengue fever infections were reported around mid August involving 44 residents in a veterans’ home in Tainan City’s East district.
