Updated Sunday, August 19, 2007 0:00 am TWN, TAIPEI, CNA Beware of Malaysia fraudsters: The Ministry of Foreign AffairsThe officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issued the warning after discovering that several Taiwanese citizens have been arrested by Malaysian police for involvement in fraud cases in that country. Initial investigations show that those Taiwanese people had traveled to Malaysia to work as “sales people” whose job was to inform others by phone of having won prizes for fraud purposes. According to MOFA officials, the Taiwanese people made contact with the Malaysian fraud rings simply through manpower recruiting advertisements in local newspapers. In the past few years, the officials said, a number of Taiwanese citizens were also conned into traveling to South Korea to work for fraud rings there after reading newspaper “talent scout” ads. After arriving in South Korea, they would be asked to cheat others by phone. Many of them have been arrested by South Korean law enforcement authorities and sentenced to prison, the officials added. Noting that similar criminal operations seem to have been duplicated in Malaysia, the officials said local people should maintain vigilance when they read suspicious “talent scout” ads in the print media. They said job seekers should carefully verify information given by potential overseas employers in order to avoid breaking the law in the countries they go to. Meanwhile, the officials went on, MOFA will cooperate with the National Police Agency and relevant foreign police authorities to prevent or thwart similar fraud operations. | Breaking News Most Read |
