15 illegal Vietnamese workers seized by police

Police have seized 15 illegal Vietnamese workers and their employer in Taoyuan County’s Yangmei township in Northern Taiwan, Chiayi County’s Shueishang Police Precinct Director Sun Ping-yi said yesterday.

The arrested employer, identified only by his surname Chiou, and the illegal workers were being investigated for violations of the Employment Services Act. The workers were sent to the National Immigration Agency’s branch Chiayi County in southern Taiwan, Sun said.

The police started their investigation after receiving a report Aug. 4 on the workers, who were said to be hiding and working in the township.

Sun said illegal labor brokers and human smuggling rings use a variety of channels to bring illegal foreign workers into Taiwan and claimed that the phenomenon results in many different social problems.”
