New Jersey holds ‘Understanding Taiwan’ cultural activities

A series of cultural activities, dubbed “Understanding Taiwan,” were held in New Jersey Saturday, bringing together a number of political figures and celebrities in the northeastern U.S. state to participate.

A ribbon cutting ceremony organized by the Press Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York was held the same day, with TECO Deputy Director Lin Wei-yang, TECO Press Division chief Ben Shao as well Congressman Scott Garrett, New Jersey Assembly member Douglas Fisher and Fort Lee Mayor Jack Alter presiding over.

Addressing the ceremony, Garrett, who has always been very friendly to Taiwan, praised the event and the TECO for contributions to boosting cultural exchanges between Taiwan and the United States.

Meanwhile, Lin also expressed his appreciation for Garrett’s longstanding support of Taiwan.

The “Understanding Taiwan” featuring Taiwan’s performing arts and exhibition were held in the Fort Lee Community Center in New Jersey for a whole day. The performances included Taiwanese film screenings, martial art tai chi performances, lion and dragon dances, contemporary and aboriginal dances, puppet shows, instrumental performances, as well as Taiwanese folk songs and a sign language performance.

In addition to the “Enchanting Taiwan” exhibition featuring Taiwan’s natural scenery, there were also a variety of other exhibitions showcasing straw weaving, paper cutting, Chinese knotting, calligraphy and many other handmade arts, and a couple of booths highlighting Taiwanese tourism, education and economy, as well as handicraft workshops for visitors.

Shao said that the series of activities were aimed at presenting traditional Taiwanese culture and providing an opportunity for residents in New Jersey to gain a better understanding of Taiwan.
