Updated Monday, July 23, 2007 0:00 am TWN, TAIPEI, CNA International Federation of Liberal Youth backs Taiwan United Nations bidThe resolution was discussed and passed unanimously by representatives from over 50 member countries from around the world. Welcoming the passage, Chou Yung-hung, director of the Department of Youth Development of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), said the support rendered to Taiwan by the IFLRY is tantamount to a slap in the face by democratic values to China’s hegemonic mentality toward Taiwan. In a statement released Sunday, the DPP said that Chou Yu-hsiu and Huang Ju yu, two representatives of the Taiwan Young Democratic Union (TYDU) who attended the IFLRY 2007 general assembly held in Dallas, Texas, July 20-22, managed on the first day of the meeting to include a proposal supporting Taiwan’s bid to enter the U.N. under the name of “Taiwan” onto the agenda of the assembly. DPP officials said that Chou and Huang stated clearly in the proposal that Taiwan has been barred from the U.N. and many other major international organizations for nearly three decades, resulting in collective deprivation of the 23 million Taiwan people’s human rights by the international community. The IFLRY is an international political umbrella organization promoting cooperation among youth and student organizations to spread liberal values. Climate change and human rights are among the different liberal challenges discussed at the IFLRY’s joint convention with the Young Democrats of America in Dallas, July 17-22. Among the featured speakers was Senator John Edwards, who is vying for Democratic Party candidacy for the 2008 U.S. presidential election. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
