Chinese-Taipei’s two teams hold on for two big opening-day upsets

Taiwan’s National Blue Team held off a flurry of second-half comeback attempts before closing out the Americans for a 70-63 upset.

Point-guard Chien Wei-Cheng proved unflappable in the face of a sticky US full-court press, and guided a disciplined, well-balanced offensive attack for Taipei. Chien did it all for Taipei, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals.

The US made several valiant attempts at regaining the lead, pulling to within four with one minute left, but were ultimately stymied by the host’s aggressive zone defense, which held them to 32 percent shooting.

Rachel Allyson, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, ignited the US squad at times but was curiously left off the floor in the closing minutes.

Wen Chi had a solid 15-point outing for the home team, which will play Japan Thursday.

The Korean team, made up of professionals from the WKBL, was led by national team standout Kim Kye Ryong, who scored a game-high 21 points. The Koreans missed 13 of their 28 free-throw attempts in the loss.

Chen Yi-Feng had twelve points and nine rebounds for the home team.

Australia 102 Japan 59 ustralia opened the women’s side of the 29th William Jones Cup with a 120-59 rout of Japan.

The Aussies used their superior size and strength to dominate inside on both ends of the floor, out-rebounding Japan 67-18 and holding them to 29-percent shooting. ABA-Knox Raiders teammates Hollie Grima and Emma Randall led the Opals with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
