Civic groups urge boycott of new Maokong cable car

Civic organizations yesterday called on the public to boycott the newly opened Maokong Skyrail after the cable car system temporarily malfunctioned during its inaugural run on Wednesday.

Some five civic groups yesterday jointly accused the Maokong Skyrail of exhibiting problems in eight areas, including the instability of the safety system, poor ventilation inside the cabins, greater quantities of trash along the mountains where the Skyrail passes, the lack of comprehensive emergency medical facilities, inadequate traffic control in adjacent areas, noise, the threat of mudslides, and difficult maintenance of the system.

A women’s group called on people not to ride the Maokong Skyrail so as not to become guinea pigs in the Maokong Skyrail oven.

Maokong Skyrail received numerous complaints yesterday of poor ventilation inside the cable car cabins, which have no air conditioning, with temperatures inside the cabins reaching 35 degrees Celsius, three degrees higher than outside.

Kuomintang presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou and Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin yesterday were trapped inside one of the Maokong Skyrail cabins after the cable car system broke down.

The two, among a group of officials and reporters, were left hanging mid-air for nine minutes before the system recovered.

The cable car system stopped running six times within two hours of the launch.
