Official disciplined over press ambushes

Lawmaker Chen Chao-jung of the opposition Kuomintang said yesterday that deputy chief of the Special Service Command Center under the National Security Bureau was forced to assume the responsibility for failing to protect Chen Hsin-yu, daughter of President Chen Shui-bian, from being bothered by reporters after shouting at her father-in-law.

Lawmaker Chen made the remarks at a press conference held yesterday afternoon at the Legislative Yuan.

He said that Hsu Hwei-yow, director of the National Security Bureau, recently ordered Hsu Li-meng, deputy chief of the Special Service Command Center under the bureau, to take the responsibility for failing to keep reporters from approaching Chen Hsin-yu for questions concerning her criticisms on her father-in-law.

Chen Hsin-yu, after learning that her husband Chao Chien-ming was sentenced to seven years in jail during the second court ruling for his alleged role in the insider trading of shares of Taiwan Development Corp., blasted her father-in-law Chao Chien-chu for getting the junior Chao involved in the trading scandal. The imprisonment term is one year longer than the original sentence.

Chen Hsin-yu asked the senior Chao to commit suicide if he dare not confess to what he said and did, and assume all the responsibility for the insider trading scam involving Chao Chien-ming.

The unusual performance of Chen Hsin-yu attracted many reporters to approach her to learn more about her unexpected anger, causing her to be surrounded by reporters when appearing at any public places such as a dental clinics in Neihu, where she was working.

Accordingly, Lawmaker Chen said he was tipped that deputy chief Hsu Li-meng of the Special Service Command Center was required by his superior Hsi Hwei-yow to be responsible for failing to properly secure the safety of members of the first family. Hsu was got two demerits as a result.

In response, the National Security Bureau denied Lawmaker Chen’s allegations, saying that Hsu Li-meng was punished mainly for failing to prevent President Chen’s previous residence in Mingshen community district from being oil bombed.
