Vice president arrives in Dominican Republic

Vice President Annette Lu, accompanied by an official delegation, flew from San Francisco, where she had an overnight stopover, early Wednesday on her way to the Dominican Republic for a three-day visit.

Lu was greeted by ROC Ambassador Chen Hsien-hsiang as well as Dominican Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Manuel Trullols, Protocol Director Pedro Gomez,and former Ambassador to the Organization of American States Pedro Blandino at the Las Americas International Airport, located to the east of the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo.

In the company of Ambassador Chen, Lu headed then for a local hotel where she will stay during her stay in the Caribbean state, and was warmly welcomed by over 100 Taiwanese expatriates waving ROC banners.

After taking a brief break, Lu will meet first with the Dominican Republic Vice President Rafael Alburquerque de Castro and President Leonel Ferandez Reyna to exchange views on a wide range of issues of mutual concern.

Later in the day, Lu and the Dominican Republic first lady will jointly preside over a ceremony to mark Taiwan’s donation of medical instruments to a local hospital and meet with Dominican reporters. The following day, she will tour historical sites and receive a title as an honorary professor from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.

The vice president is scheduled to depart Santo Domingo July 6 for Paraguay, where she will take part in a series of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the ROC and Paraguay and hold talks with Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte Frutos. Paraguay is Taiwan’s sole diplomatic ally in South America.

After staying for three nights in the South America nation, Lu will leave for Guatemala for a three-day visit via Panama, where her flight will stop briefly for refueling.
