Photos released of suspects in murder of Councilman Wu

Police yesterday released the photos of two suspects allegedly involved with the murder of Taipei County councilor Wu Shan-chiu.

The 49-year-old councilor from the People First Party died May 23 after being shot several times by a gunman at his office.

Pictures of Wang Yueh-kai, 24, and Lan Chia-wei, 35, were made public by Taipei County’s Hsintien branch police.

Lan is believed by police to be the gunman, while Wang (aka “Aken”) is allegedly the mastermind behind the crime.

Days earlier, the suspects were spotted in Yilan and Panchiao areas. Police investigators said they are on the run and have probably parted ways. The suspects are believed to be armed.

A special police task force is currently devoting all its manpower to bringing the suspects to justice, said police.

Police are asking for the public’s help in apprehending the suspects by calling toll-free 0800-000-110 or the Hsintien Branch 02-29119705 with any tips. Anyone who provides information that leads to the capture of the suspects will receive a cash reward.

Wu was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 1 p.m. after he was shot four times about an hour and a half earlier at the office in Hsintien City.

Wu had devoted much of his work to preventing illegal gravel mining from Hsintien Creek, and he had been calling for a tougher crackdown on more than 10 illegal gravel mining companies in the area.

Wu’s aides told police that the gunman arrived at the office and asked in Mandarin whether the councilor was in.

He then drew a gun and shot at Wu, the aides said. The incident took less than a minute, they added.
