SEF ad argues unification possible through democracy

Vice Chairman Chang Chun-hung of the Straits Exchange Foundation, a semi-official organization in charge of mediating with mainland China, said yesterday in a full-page advertisement in a local daily that the unification of China can be possible with democratization on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

A modern China that follows a path of peaceful democracy can unite with Taiwan, said Chang. By the same token, if Taiwan can develop peaceful democracy, it can unite with China, said Chang.

Chang further called for a movement based on the idea that “A good Taiwan will lead to a better Chinese society and a better society in China.”

Chang said that this idea should be established as a consensus for a “civilized China” in the process of unifying China and Taiwan.

The vice chairman said that the whole world knows that only if this great nation moves towards civilization, democracy, and rule of law can the world be a better place.

Chang further proposes a “One China, one system” idea to counter mainland China’s “One China, two systems” governing model used for Hong Kong.

He said that under the “One China, one system,” true unification can be achieved if the country’s leader is directly elected by people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Chang said that the “one system” in his model refers to democracy and the rule of law.

The Democratic Progressive Party member said that Taiwan should bravely face the “One China” issue to end the fight between Taiwan and mainland China over their names.

Chang called for the DPP to create a new “production line” for Taiwan, which involves securing the foundation for democracy and furthering economic development.

He said the DPP can play a role in bringing mainland China towards the path of democracy, like how it drove the Kuomintang along the path of reform.

If Taiwan, after establishing the world’s common value of democracy — can actively drive mainland China’s democratic development along with its economy, the international community that worries over the rise of mainland China will realize the value of Taiwan’s existence, Chang said.

The DPP has shown the ability to lead Taiwan in the past and won the support of the Taiwanese people and today it can show its ability to lead the way for mainland China, said Chang.

As Dubai leads the way in the Arab region, Taiwan can also receive the applause of the people of mainland China as well as people from around the world. Chang also called on the government and the opposition to establish free trade zones in locations near airports and seaports, as well as experimental special administrative zones to attract financial flow, energy and resources from abroad.
