YouTube co-founder back in Taipei

Taiwan-born Steve Chen, co-founder and chief technology officer of the wildly popular videosharing Web site YouTube, told some young students yesterday that the most important knowledge he had learned in Taiwan was the multiplication table.

Chen paid a visit yesterday morning to his alma mater, Chinghsin Elementary School in Taipei, where he made the remarks in response to questions from students.

After finishing second grade at the school some 20 years ago, Chen and his parents moved to Chicago, in the U.S.

Chen toured the classroom where he studied 20 years ago, and was soon caught up in talking about colorful memories from his days at the school.

The school prepared a full set of academic gear for Chen, albeit under-sized: a second-grader’s student uniform, hat and schoolbag, and bestowed him an “Outstanding Alumnus” plaque.

He told his younger fellow alumni he was fortunate to experience two different types of educational systems — in Taiwan and the U.S. — and said that helped him a lot in life.

Chen also noted that if there is a chance in the future, he would like to return to Chingshin Elementary School to learn “bopomofo,” or the Chinese phonetic symbols, so that he can pronounce Chinese more accurately.
