So said a Taipei traffic court judge yesterday in ordering a Chengchi University senior to pay NT$12,000 in fine for speeding.

The student, identified only as Chen, was caught speeding at 157 kilometers an hour at the mouth of the Wenshan tunnel on Taipei’s Hsinyi speedway last February 5.

A police speed monitor camera showed the motorist drove 87 kilometers in excess of the speed limit within the tunnel, the TVBS cable television network reported yesterday. Chen couldn’t believe his 10-year-old jalopy, a Nissan Primera, could reach speeds that high. He appealed to the traffic court. He told the judge something eerie was going on when he passed the tunnel.

On both sides of the speedway are graves, Chen said. The speedway passes through a public cemetery. There must be “something supernatural” that affects the normal function of the monitor camera.

Many people in Taiwan believe those who died turn themselves into ghosts. Chen tried to get ghosts involved in his case, though he did not say he heard any of them talk.

“Don’t ghost-talk,” the judge warned Chen, adding: “A ghost does not talk.” The cable channel didn’t say when the verdict was handed down. It aired an interview with Chen last night.
