PFT’s Chien calls for election law amendment

Peacetime Foundation of Taiwan (PFT) Executive Director Chien Hsi-chieh is calling for the amendment of the election law to add an abstaining option on the ballot of future legislative and presidential elections.

Chien said that the ballot after the amendment would include the option “I do not support all of the above candidates.”

Chien said that if the abstaining option receives the highest number of votes, then the results of the election should be nullified and a new election should be held.

Chien said that he hopes his plan to amend the election law can give middle-of-the-road voters a voice and the power to break through Taiwan’s political impasse.

The executive director said that the abstaining vote is an example of a “non-violent struggle” against authority that the PFT has been pushing for.

Chien cited the demonstration of the “red-clad army” last year at the Presidential Office as another example of a non-violent struggle against authority.

Non-violent struggles that succeeded in the world include Gandhi’s movement against the rule of Great Britain in India and Nelson Mandela’s fight against apartheid in South Africa, said Chien.
