Updated Tuesday, May 22, 2007 0:00 am TWN, The China Post staff Baby-trafficking couple are sentenced to 12 years in prisonThe doctor and his wife Chong Su-man were detained last July after prosecutors and police learned that Wang was allegedly selling babies at a price of NT$280,000 to NT$350,000 per baby at his clinic located in the Shilin District of Taipei. Wang and Chong were charged with the purchase of 11 babies, the sale of 39 babies, and the issuing of 101 false birth certificates, according to the Shilin District Court. The babies were abandoned by the parents and should have been taken to orphanages. Wang and his wife obtained the infants from a maternity clinic also trying to make money. The buyers were people who did not want to go through the legal and normal adoption process, which could also be competitive. The court also sentenced others involved with the illegal operation, including doctor Hsieh Chen-an to two years in jail. Hsieh was found to be involved in infant trafficking since June of 2006. Liao Yao-si was sentenced to 22 months, while Kuo Hui-mei and Tsai Chuan-hsiu each received 16 months. Chuan Mei-hua, Ou Yi-fang, Chen Hui-chieh, Chiang Yu-hua, Lin Li-ying, and Chou Chin-ying each received 18 months for selling babies. On the purchasing side, Li Chien-shun and 54 others each received an 18-month sentence.
