Taxi driver shot in head in Fengshan

Police in the southern Fengshan City are investigating the mysterious shooting of a taxi driver who may have been shot in the head at point-blank range.

Wang Jen-fung, 54, was taken to hospital for emergency treatment after his car rammed into pillars on a Fengshan street in Kaohsiung County yesterday morning.

Police first thought it was a simple traffic accident before they were informed that a bullet was found in Wang’s head.

They later judged that he may have been shot in the head by a person sitting in the back seat. The shooting would have made the driver lose control of the wheel and crash into the columns before the gunman got of the car, according to a police officer.

Photos from surveillance cameras on the street showed that a man ran into an adjacent street lane at unusual speed.

Some eyewitnesses said the man used a towel to cover his hand, allegedly concealing his handgun.

Police said the fare meter on the cab stopped at the figure of NT$325, indicating the man had been in the car for quite a distance.

The driver was still in critical condition and could not talk following operation.

Police said the truth about what actually took place inside the taxi will be known after they catch the shooter.
