Dog dragged 2 kilometers by scooter

A dog was seriously injured after being dragged some two kilometers by two unidentified youngsters riding a scooter in Tainan County, a local newspaper reported yesterday.

The dog had a total of 12 visible wounds, and the skin on the dog’s front paws was practically gone, said Yao Jen-chieh, the veterinarian who attended the female canine.

The incident was discovered by an off-duty policeman, who saw the two youngsters dragging “something” while riding a scooter at a high speed at around 2 a.m. Tuesday on the southern county’s Nanping Road, reported the United Daily News.

The perpetrators fled the scene, leaving the dog behind, after the policeman, surnamed Lin, yelled out at them.

Upon discovering the female dog, Lin notified animal rights activists who arranged for it to be sent to the veterinary hospital.

According to the county government’s animal protection section chief Wang Hung-chan, the county has received several reports of animal abuse cases in recent years.

Even though the fine for animal abuse is between NT$10,000 and NT$50,000, these cases still continue to happen, said Wang.
