Police in Hsinchu County captured an electric cable thief who had led them on a car chase spanning t

wo counties at speeds of around 160 kilometers an hour.

The suspect Wang Hung-chou was caught in Taoyuan county after Hsinchu County police officer He Lin-chin fired a shot at the car, which penetrated the vehicle and injured Wang's buttocks.

Wang was transported to a nearby hospital where he is undergoing surgery.

Another suspect in Wang's car escaped.

The chase began early yesterday morning when Wang sped off as police in Chudong township, Hsinchu County approached his car, which was loaded with electric cable and carried a metal door on the roof.

Wang began leading police on a fifty-kilometer chase that passed through Hsinchu city along local roads.

At one point, a Chudong township officer said, the metal door on the roof of Wang's car fell off and the officer had to swerve to avoid being struck.

Police repeatedly tried to overtake Wang, who swerved to block the surging police cars.

Fortunately the car chase took place during the early morning when less pedestrians and vehicles are present on the road, police said.

A total of seven police units, including Chudong township police, Hsinchu city police, Hsinchu county police, and Hsinchu traffic police took part in the pursuit, which ended when Wang reached a dead end near a river in Yangmei township, Taoyuan County.

Officer He first fired a warning shot before shooting at the left rear tire of Wang's vehicle.

The shot missed the target and penetrated Wang's car door, hitting Wang in the buttocks.
