Updated Sunday, April 8, 2007 0:00 am TWN, The China Post staff Seminar on contributions of journalism teacherThe academic conference, entitled “Symposium on Professor Cheng’s Perspectives on Journalism Education and Practice,” will take place on April 9 and will be attended by scholars and researchers from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. “Prof. Cheng has obtained two journalism degrees and is the first to write a paper centering on journalism education,” organizers of the symposium at Zhejiang University said. “Over the past 40 years, Prof. Cheng has developed a unique journalism teaching style and has contributed significantly to the field. He can be described as an educator, newspaperman and romanticist.” During the seminar, Prof. Cheng himself will present a paper on his views on quality journalism and mass communications education in the current fast-changing society and in the years ahead. Other participants at the seminar in Hangzhou City include Wang Ying-chi, former resident supervisor of Central News Agency, and Lai Hsiang-wei, professor of Chinese Culture University, from Taiwan. Representatives from China will include journalism and mass communications professors from Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Chiaotung University, Shanghai University, Nanjing University, Fujian Normal University, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Zhejiang University is ranked No. 3 among Chinese universities, after Beijing University and Tsing Hua University, in terms of academic excellence. Before his visit to Zhejiang, Cheng attended a cultural exchange seminar in Macau in early April. The seminar each year gathers scholars from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau and is held at the four locations on a rotational basis. The theme of the year’s seminar was “Image of a City’s Culture.” Prof. Cheng led a mission of close to 20 delegates comprised of professors and senior education officials from higher-learning institutes in Taiwan to the seminar. They included Wang Ying-chi, Shen Hui-sheng, Peng Huei-en, Lai Hsiang-wei, Chou Yu-shan, Chen Tung-yuan, Lu Chieh-hua, Chou Ching-hsiang, Yang Shen-hsiung, and Yu Ling-chiang. Over the past four decades, Prof. Cheng has cultivated a large number of university graduates who later became educators in journalism or held senior executive positions at mass media organizations in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, North America, and Southeast Asian nations. As a creative and prolific writer, he has also completed more than a dozen academic books and frequently has his articles published in Chinese-language newspapers and magazines around the world. | Breaking News Most Read |
